Definition

An AI workflow is a sequence of business steps that includes at least one model-based task, such as interpreting a message or preparing a draft. The surrounding steps may follow fixed rules. Calling a process an AI workflow does not mean the model chooses the route, controls permissions, or performs the final action.

Owner example

Synthetic example: A new support message enters a fixed sequence: validate its ID, supply the approved FAQ, request a draft, and save it for a person. The model helps with language while the application fixes the route.

Non-example and limitation

Copying form fields into a sheet with no model step is ordinary automation. A chat answer outside a defined process does not by itself establish an operating workflow with ownership and recovery.

Compare an AI agent with agentic AI. Human in the loop describes a person’s review role.

Read the automation comparison for the fuller explanation. Use the support drafting playbook to apply the distinction to a bounded task.
