Definition

Agentic AI describes systems in which a model chooses some of the steps used to pursue a goal, rather than following only a predetermined sequence. The system may select a tool, inspect its result, and decide whether to continue or ask for help. The term does not establish accuracy, unrestricted autonomy, or permission to act.

Owner example

Synthetic example: A support system chooses between an approved knowledge lookup and an authorized order lookup. It stops if neither supplies enough evidence. Its only output is a draft for review, so choosing steps does not grant sending authority.

Non-example and limitation

A fixed sequence that always reads notes, drafts a summary, and saves it is AI-assisted but does not need model-directed routing. Vendor usage of “agentic” varies; ask which choices the model actually controls.

An AI agent is a system using this kind of choice. An AI workflow is the broader process that may or may not include it.
